Kansas Sit In

I went to hear this speaker at the Union Hall last night talking about the plight of regular folk in Kansas.  He described a situation that is bad getting worse every day.  Despite their values and their work ethic, the rest of the country barely knows they exist.  No one goes to visit or takes vacations there.  And over 50 years later, everyone still thinks they're going to meet Auntie Emm or Toto.  There's actually a high rate of depression, except the depression is rooted so deep, they don't even know it's depression.  Psychologists and psychiatrists have examined many people and found depression, except Kansans don't think they're depressed.  They just don't talk that much so people think they're depressed.

This guy's speech was the beginning of a campaign to get the word out about Kansas.  I'm looking forward to hearing more.  KaKa Kansas (kakakansas.com) is Kare of Kause For Kansas and they are going to have a rally next month.

Lump Labmeat

Went to the Lump Labmeat concert. Fiona, Lambda, Morkreve, Delworth, Shulfan and Joe all went too. It was a riot. They did that song, of course, "You Know We Have To Play This Song." We all sang along. The lead singer, Al K. Line asked everyone to save the crabs. I'm going to see if there's a website for that. Or maybe he was kidding. I wasn't able to find a website.

Self-reflexive Sketching

I went the Museum (themuseumblog) today by myself. I wanted to sketch people who were at the museum sketching paintings. I started to sketch and then this other guy started to sketch me sketching other people sketching. Then this other guy came in and started to sketch the guy sketching me sketching other people sketching. Then this guard came over and told all us to get the hell out of there. I’m sorta’ glad he did. I was the first one there to do self-reflexive sketching. You can’t have two people doing the same thing. I think the guard and I understood each other. His name was Jim.

Pet Shop Noise

This new pet shop opened up nearby newpetshopopenedupblog. When I went in, something clicked in me and I wanted to take every creature home. I started to ask the owner to add up how much it would cost to buy them all. He probably thought I wasn't serious. I was serious. Until I realized that it would cost too much.

But something struck me. I decided to make a connection with each and every creature in there. I decided to stare intently at every creature in the store for 15 seconds exactly. I'd stare at the Kissing Gouramis for 15 seconds, then move on to another kissing gourami, then to the clown fish, to the black ferret, and so on. The store owner didn't really like this and told me I had to go. I felt a real connection with pets.

Pets are like things between us and ourselves that help us connect with that thing between us and ourselves. When people take a pet in, they are really taking themselves into themselves. And becoming more whole, while also making sure the animal has a place to itself which is not the owner's, but theirs. Yet, in a way, is really the owner's. But the pet's too.

V is for Vumba

I met this woman at The Wrap Place wrapblogplaceblog. Her name is Vumba, vumbuneeblog. She’s very exotic looking. Sort of looks like Sade, if she had all grey hair and really pale skin. Her parents are Scandinavian and Ecuadorian. Vumba and I went out for coffee and she told me that she’s in Mutilator’s Anonymous. It got me thinking. I don’t want to mutilate myself. My body is holy. Her body, well, she told me about these scars.
